At some point, Google Analytics entered the game, and provided beautiful colorful charts to anyone who could insert a paragraph’s worth of gobble-de-gook HTML code. Better yet, you could look at your website statistics without everyone else seeing them!

Google Analytics is pretty amazing, but even more amazing is how many people don’t ever check theirs. Sure, you have to log into yet another Google Product, for which you probably set up a different username and password–a password which you promptly forgot. But not checking your website analytics is just as bad as not monitoring your sales. Or not keeping track of when you need to buy coffee next. It can lead to crisis.

This is particularly true if you are paying to advertise your website anywhere. The worst thing that could happen is that you throw $300 a month into an online ad (or three hours of your time into social media) and you don’t even know that it is not generating any traffic!

So please, please install Google Analytics and check it regularly!

I have to admit that even I cannot remember to do this. Fortunately we have great analytics people on staff, who will look up your statistics for you, point out anything that looks strange, and email the whole thing (with a pretty colored line graph) to you each month for just $39. Or you can do it yourself.

Just make sure you choose one of those options, and see how it changes the focus of your online promotions.

It’s a bit crazy how I could look at our site and it just felt two years old. A lot of our customers come to us with sites that are five or 10 years old, and it shows. They want to build a more successful business, but the face they are showing to their most tech-savvy customers is dated and tattered.

What you might not know is that your blog has the capacity to do several tasks for you, and eliminate a few items from your list instead of adding to it.

How?

A real blog (one that creates links for each article individually, and records the date and author for each post) also has something called an RSS feed. This RSS feed is very useful. It means that your blog is kind of like its own broadcasting system. You can use the technology that creates the feed to do all sorts of useful tasks.

Your blog feed can post the articles on your site to your social media profiles. So, blog first, then hit publish, and you can go ahead and check off “social media” from your list this week.

Your blog feed means your articles will show up in Google’s Blog Search, which will improve your search ranking in that subset, but also in overall Google Search. So, blog and watch your search ranking rise!

Your blog feed can integrate with certain email newsletter services to create an email newsletter for you from the articles you’ve already written on your blog. Blog first, then your newsletter will appear. Voila! If you are reading this article in an email from SiteInSight, you can see this technology at work. SiteInSight does not create a newsletter each month. We simply set our newsletter program to access our blog feed once a month, and pull the articles into a pre-set newsletter format. It’s like magic!

• Flash video: A few years ago, it was popular to use a program called “Flash” to create interesting effects, movement, animation and more. Sometimes the menu was built in Flash so that it would do fancy things when touched with the mouse. Some sites had a homepage built entirely in Flash. The effects are amazing. The utility, unfortunately, is not good. Flash doesn’t work at all on smartphones, so your visitors may see a blank page instead of a cool effect. Even on computers, the software required to view it has to be updated often to keep it working.
• Cluttered navigation menu: Sites than have been around awhile tend to gather a complicated collection of menu links, in the same way old houses collect furniture. It’s not deliberate. It just happens. We add a page here and there and want it represented in the menu, and soon the drop-down menu has three levels of submenus, and there are eight choices across the top. This is quite difficult to work when you are squinting at a tiny phone screen and moving it around with your finger.
• Different priorities for the smartphone user: Someone visiting your website from a smartphone may have different tendencies than someone visiting from a laptop or desktop computer. For a restaurant, a computer visitor may want to browse the menu and see pictures of the food, while a smartphone user may be lost and trying to quickly find a map of the location with someone behind them honking their horn.

If any of these apply to your website, you should know the term “responsive design.” Responsive design means that your website changes how it displays, depending on what device is used to view it. One of my favorite phrases is one that apples to responsive design: “degrades elegantly.” Programmers say that the site is at its best on a computer screen, but it “degrades elegantly” as the screen size decreases. You won’t see every cool feature on your smartphone, but you can still work the menu easily and it will preserve the basic design.

For those with a basic site, we can add a plugin that will display your site in a mostly text format when viewed on a smartphone. It’s not as elegant, but it’s not frustrating for your visitors, either.
